Why You Need to Listen to Youngblood by 5SOS
5 Seconds of Summer just released on April 13th their second single and title track from their upcoming album Youngblood. They released their first single, Want You Back in February, when they also announced an upcoming 2018 tour.
If you aren't already familiar with 5SOS, first, where have you been, and second, let me give you a little back story. 5SOS is made up of Luke Hemmings (vocals, guitar), Calum Hood (vocals, bass, keyboards), Michael Clifford (guitar, backing vocals), and Ashton Irwin (drums, backing vocals). They are originally from Sydney, Australia and started out as a Youtube cover band when they caught the eye of one of the guys of One Direction and eventually got asked to open for them on their upcoming tour in 2013 when they pretty much blew up.
In 2014, the lead single from their debut album, She Looks So Perfect reached international radio success and seemed to lead towards more of a boyband, One Direction sound than the pop/rock punk sound they were trying to brand themselves as. The band went on to release a second album, Sounds Good, Feels Good, several headlining tours, and set up their own record label, Hi or Hey Records in conjunction with Capitol Records.
To support their upcoming album, the band has embarked on a worldwide tour hitting all the major cities but playing tiny venues. Unfortunately for me, 5SOS hit both London and Boston within three days of each other, except both times in the city opposite the one I was in (honestly what are the odds?!). But they did announce the first round of dates on their Meet You There Tour which includes North American dates this summer that I definitely plan on being at! (dates below)
Anyway, Want You Back was a solid first song that definitely got me excited about new music from 5SOS. I wasn't the biggest fan of their previous records but with the new single, 5SOS were definitely on my radar. Except everything changed this past week week when I heard their latest single, Youngblood. That song is pure gold.
The songs starts off slow the beat turns into a catchy snap that explodes into a killer addictive chorus complete with Luke's snarling and pulsating sythns. The production is amazing and I was impressed the entire time I was listening. If you do nothing else today, PLEASE listen to this song.
Youngblood and Want You Back is nothing else if not clear in the change of sound for the band and I have to say I am so excited to see what's next. Youngblood might be the most anticipated album of 2018 for me right now.
Their third studio album, Youngblood, will be released on 22 June 2018 so make sure you check it out!
